Updated: Sep 20, 2017
The Selah Boys and Girls cross country teams dominated this last weekend.
The girls team had a short trip to Naches Heights to compete in their first meet of the season at the Apple Ridge Invite. With thick competition, the Lady Viks had a stellar performance and came in second respectively behind 4A Hanford. Kaylea Hartman crossed the finish line first for the Vikings in 4th place for Flight 1 with a fine 3-mile time of 19:40 with Ketra Pope and freshman Aryanna Gonzalez not far behind her. In Flight 2, Selah was led by Junior Anna Swedin with a 6th place at 19:40. Charis Williams, Caden Clark, and Kendyl Fitzsimmons also had great races following close behind. Molly Mattson led the Vikings in hilly Flight 3 with a 2nd place and a time of 19:02. Kaleigh Dalrymple and freshman Kyrsten Callahan and Trinity Fontana closely followed pursuit.
The boys, on the other hand, left Selah High School at 5:30 in the morning to travel to their second meet: the Fort Steilacoom Invitational in Tacoma. Michael Strand led the freshman flight for Selah with a fantastic rookie 5K time of 21:33 in a thick field of competition. The sophomores, led by Jon Watkins and LaRon Love, had a very successful race and scored 4th place as a team. Furthermore, the junior and senior Vikings had a great day as well with a 2nd place team finish overall with Hunter Jones and Cody Salinas leading the charge. To cap off the day, the Selah varsity, led by captains Chris Urakawa and Daniel Callahan, defeated 2nd-ranked Liberty (Issaquah) in a tight match that was decided by few points.
Both the boys and girls cross country teams travel to Prosser this Thursday for league meet #1 and Saturday to Bellevue to compete in the Bellevue Invite at Lake Sammamish.
